Alex Alexander:

Welcome back to another episode of “Ask the Attorney.” I’m your host, Alex Alexander with Client Focused Media. Today, I’m super excited to bring Kim Lisa Taylor from Syndication Attorneys, “More Than Just a Law Firm.” You can find them on the web at syndicationattorneys.com. Welcome, Kim; how are you today?

Kim Lisa Taylor:

I’m doing well. Thank you so much for having me on your show.

Alex Alexander:

I appreciate you being here greatly. You and I talked a little bit beforehand, and you were not always in law. You did something to help “keep you grounded.” Tell me a little bit about that.

Kim Lisa Taylor:

I actually used to be an environmental consultant, practicing as a geologist. I still have a license as a professional geologist in California, so that’s, yeah, my prior career. I looked into future and said, “I don’t want to keep doing that forever, so I think I’ll go to law school,” and decided to make the jump.

Alex Alexander:

In going to law school [and after graduating], did you do the typical I come out of law school at this point, I’m going to work for a public defender’s office or prosecution, something like that? What did you do?

Kim Lisa Taylor:

Well, no. I had this other career for 15 years. I went to law school kind of later in life, and decided I didn’t want to compete with a bunch of 25-year-olds … didn’t want to go into a big law practice, so I started working as a contract attorney just for multiple different attorneys in different areas of the law to figure out where I might go and what I might do.

I always knew that I wanted to have a law degree to help further my own business, but what I eventually learned is that I’d like to have a law degree to be able to help other people further their business, which is kind of the focus of our practice.

I just worked with these different attorneys, did litigation for a while, found out it wasn’t my thing. I don’t like fighting all the time. I’d rather put deals together, so that’s how I ended up here.

Alex Alexander:

So tell us a little bit about syndicationattorneys.com. Obviously I’ve been to your website, I’m actually on your website, and a little bit about the real estate development and entrepreneurs and that kind of stuff, talk to us a little bit about it.

Kim Lisa Taylor:

I was always interested in buying real estate and investment real estate for myself. I married my husband, who had been investing in real estate for a long time. And we explored buying some multifamily apartments for ourselves. We joined a coaching program and got some education about that. And during that process, I met an attorney who was teaching people how to legally raise private money. I started working with him, and we formed a law firm. That was in 2008 (that) we started working together. In 2010 we formed a law firm, and I’ve just been putting together these syndications, which are really just a group of people pooling their money to go out and buy real estate. I’ve been doing that since 2008, and in 2016 I spun off my own law firm in Florida — Syndication Attorneys — and that’s all we do is help people put these real estate deals together. Most of them are buying commercial projects, and they’re pooling money from private investors in order to pay for the down payment and closing costs and improvements.

Alex Alexander:

I noticed that on your website … you have marketing materials there (and) people can actually visit your store online, and also I think one of the main things — and you’ve mentioned it — was a free resource, your book about How to Legally Raise Private Money. Tell us a little bit about some of the offerings you guys have on the website.

Kim Lisa Taylor:

We like to say we’re “More Than a Law Firm,” because we have a broad range of services. We offer the legal services, but we also have a lot of educational projects. I’m a firm believer that if you understand what you’re doing, then you’re going to be confident in the way you do it and you’re going to be more successful. So we help people get the education they need to do this legally, without fear of going to jail or any trouble with securities laws. And then we also have a marketing division that helps them create professionally designed marketing materials —  investor pitch decks and investment summaries, things like that that would accompany their securities offering, or help portray them as a professional business in the marketplace.

Alex Alexander:

That is incredible, awesome. I really like the fact that you took something, first of all you had a pretty good living at one point, right? Doing what you like — I would suppose that you get into geology, you kind of almost have to like it — and then you decide, “You know what, I’m going to change.” And then you make such a drastic change going to law. You’ve done very well. I want to congratulate you a lot here.

Kim Lisa Taylor:

Thank you.
